Christmas Figurines
Christmas Figurines are the combined creations of nearly every culture for more than a
thousand years.
Christmas figurines have been sculptured to represent the hanging stocking and putting out the shoe custom from European countries. Today we have the tradition of decorating our inside tree to produce a center of attention with hanging smaller commemorative and collectible Christmas figurines.
Christmas figurines are styled to characterize the popular Nativity scene, one of the most loved and longest lasting symbols of the Christmas season, was originally crafted by Giovanni Velliti from Greccio, Italy. The figurines became a tremendous inspiration to his entire village and its visitors.
Angels are one of the most prevalent symbols of Christmas all over the Christian world, weather in figurines of life size lighted plastic or as a tree topper. These figurines have challenged the sculptures’ imagination all throughout the year but especially the Christmas angel.
Christmas bells and of course the magnificent star have been made of nearly every material known to man, creating figurines to hang on the door, use as a center piece and to adorn the Christmas tree.
Christmas figurines of shepherds and sheep are collectible as are the three wise men (or kings) from the Far East with their gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh sometimes pictured alone and in manger scenes. This may have started the gift giving tradition, but the combined influences of the German and Dutch are primarily responsible for bringing this incredibly popular and extremely commercialized custom to America.
Reindeer figurines have come to be associated with Christmas. How else would Santa be able to get all the way around the world in one night; if not for Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen, Comet, Cupid, Doner, and Blitzen from the poem created in the 1800’s and that guy with the shiny red nose Rudolph brought to life in 1939, to guide him? This has generated great imaginative Christmas figurines of every description from nearly every corner of the world.
The tiny fairy like Christmas elves with their pointed ears have inspired an enormous amount of fantastically styled colorful figurines of both male and female. These guys and gals have a tremendous responsibility; processing children’s requests, helping design and make toys, taking care of the reindeer, keeping the sleigh in good shape and ready to go, being secret agents to keep the naughty or nice list up to date, and most important keeping and guarding the secret location of the workshop. This deserves having their very own special Christmas figurines in their likeness.
Porcelain and resin have created magnificent figurines in the image of artificial flowers styled after the poinsettia and the Christmas rose as well as sprigs of mistletoe and holly in an assortment of sizes to brighten our homes.
For the sweetness of Christmas holiday season, the candy cane in a plain white stick has been around for centuries. It was bent into the shape of a cane and red stripes were added, somewhere around 1900, and now comes in figurines made of porcelain and glass as well as other materials for display or tree ornaments.
The origin of the Christmas tree ornaments is of the finest European hand blown glass figurines, produced primarily by the Germans who made over 5000 different ones and was first imported to the United States by the Woolworth Company in 1890.
Christmas figurines are typically about traditions and memories and are keepsakes surrounded by other endeavors that the entire family will always remember and cherish. When the 25 plus million families in America celebrate Christmas this year, figurines will help these times stay alive and be treasured. Find your favorite Christmas figurine today.
