Dragon Figurines
Dragon figurines help us keep a picturesque history of obscure living things from folklore legends. The world of fantasy and myths portray dragons as good and evil, both are symbolized in dragon figurines.
Dragon figurines introduce us to the fierce, gigantic, bloodthirsty beasts that appear in fairy tales. Some of these dragon tales were written as far back as civilized mankind kept recorded history, with both fierce and congenial figurines obtainable to back-up these stories. Some accounts of treasure guarding dragons are oral, and passed down through hundreds, even thousands of generations, but we still have figurines to complement the legends.
The very first written dragon chronicle that inspired many figurines is from the Sumerian civilization. They were a member of the ancient Babylonian people, who had the oldest known language preserved in writing, and even now it is unrelated to any other language. These historical artifacts are called the “Cuneiform Tablets” and date back to about 3000 BC.
The area these dragon fables, that originated the likenesses of today’s figurines came from the vicinity that later became Persia, located somewhere between the Euphrates and Tigris Rivers. That region is known today as Iran and Iraq.
The preceding civilizations to the Sumerians had basically the same mythology of dragons; they were commonly regarded as monsters, and most likely artistically discussed by portrayals and characteristics instead of by name. Even then figurines of a sort were being fashioned.
Many of the dragon figurines that symbolize the oral and printed legends strongly resemble actual reptilian creatures that inhabited earth long before man is supposed to have been here, so some could be based in fact. A dinosaur skull was discovered in South Dakota (in 2004) it is flat-headed, has a long muzzle, dragon like horns and teeth. Could this be one of the ancient dragons that legends and figurines are styled to resemble?
The medieval times brought us the most magically fascinating dragon figurines with the brave knights slaying dragons on a daily basis to become the hero of the day, all for the fair maiden.
Let us not forget the oriental dragon figurines, for they bring us good luck and well being. It has been noted that eleven of the signs of the Chinese zodiac calendar are still alive today, but the twelfth (the dragon) is merely a myth except in paintings, figurines, chess sets and a few other collectible articles.
