 John Wayne finally received his well deserved Oscar for the role of a one eyed federal marshal Rooster Cogburn in “True Grit”1969. The climax to his career, his last film “The Shootist”1976 was like an epitaph. In it John Wayne played an aging gunslinger dying of cancer. The disease took his life on June 11, 1979.
