Precious Moments Figurines
Precious Moments figurines are one of the easiest recognized and most cherished in today’s world of collectible figurines. Precious Moments figurines with their trademark teardrop shaped eyes have become incredibly popular to commemorate all kinds of special occasions. These porcelain bisque collectibles have hundreds of styles, but they all share the same rounded face, soft pastel colors and of course the teardrop eyes that are Sam’s Precious Moments figurines. Precious Moments did not start as figurines. More than thirty years ago illustrator Samuel J. Butcher began drawing the endearing children he called “Precious Moments” with messages of caring, sharing and love. This artwork was used primarily as gifts to comfort and encourage family and friends, but today his cherished Precious Moments figurines touch the hearts and lives of millions all over the world.
Samuel was born on January 1, 1939 in Jackson, Michigan, the third of five children in a very poor family. Sam demonstrated extraordinary artistic talent at a very early age. He earned a scholarship and after high school graduation attended the College of Arts & Crafts in Berkeley. In the early 1970’s Sam and his good friend Bill Biel started a small company named Jonathan & David to produce and sell his Precious Moments cards and art posters accompanied by inspirational messages to flea markets and localized traffic. His big break came when they took a booth at the Christian Booksellers Association Convention in Anaheim, California. Their tiny booth became so swarmed with enthusiastic customers trying to order the new line of creative Precious Moments, they had to have neighboring vendors come over to help them write orders.
Not long after the convention Sam was approached by Eugene Friedman, then CEO of Enesco Corporation, to allow them to make his exquisite art into three-dimensional figurines. Eugene took one of Sam’s cards called “Love One Another” to a lifelong friend Yasuhei Fujioka, a Japanese sculptor. When Sam saw the figurines he cried tears of joy. That was the beginning of Precious Moments figurines. That figurine became part of what was called the Original 21, Precious Moments figurines which made its debut at Chicago’s trade show in the fall of 1978 with overwhelming success. This was the beginning of the Precious Moments figurines phenomenon that sent Sam on his way and created a beautiful gift for the gift industry. In 1980 Precious Moments figurines started the collectors club and the fan club in the 1990’s, with a collective membership of over 500,000 to date.
In the 1980’s when Enesco took over word wide distributorship of Precious Moments figurines, they had become one of the top porcelain collectible figurines brand in America. Sam Butcher established Precious Moments, Inc in 1989 to cope with the growing demand for the figurines and act as a managing company as sales continued to steadily increase. Today Precious Moments quality figurines collection with Sam’s message of loving and sharing has of over 1600 pieces which includes; bells, plates, ornaments, thimbles, jewelry boxes and more. Each year several Precious Moments figurines are retired to make room for new introductions. Retired Precious Moments figurines become highly sought after by avid collectors.
A great value; Precious Moments figurines typically list for $30.00 to $60.00, in contrast to some other figurines may list for three to five times as much. Still Precious Moments figurines continue to brighten our lives every time we look into those gorgeous teardrop eyes. When you are looking for that perfect gift for that special occasion or just because, there is tremendous joy in giving and receiving Precious Moments figurines.
