Religious figurines adorn scores of our front yards and private gardens. Many of the great designer’s works in charcoal and water colors have been made into religious figurines.
Religious figurines are most likely one of the oldest of all figurines. In 1996 Dr. Nancy Serwint gave a lecture in which she discussed the thousands of religious figurines collected from sacred deposits outside a temple, on the island of Cyprus, that dates to about 500 BC. Some of these religious figurines stand more than six feet tall and are the source of important information about religious practices around the Eastern Mediterranean.
Another source of very popular, well loved and highly valued religious figurines are those fashioned after the drawings of Sister Maria Innocentia Hummel, known as Berta Hummel, a German Franciscan, born in Massing, Bavaria and lived during the Nazis-Hitler era. The tremendously talented creator of these highly collectible
drawings and sketches from which Hummel religious figurines are drafted, are appropriately called “happy children”. Much to our sadness and dismay Berta died of tuberculosis on November 6, 1946 at the age of 37.

Today the capable Goebel artists still base their religious figurines on her drawings when deciding on the next “M. I. Hummel” authentic work of art.
